Monday's Report

Today was the opening day for the 2007 Rocky Mountain Christian Audio Camp.  I must say, as one of the ten students learning from John Doryk, that this is going to be an awesome week, if today was any indication of how the remainder of the Camp will progress.  John is so full of knowledge and does a great job of presenting the information.  It was like the overused expression “drinking from a fire hydrant.”

Today’s sessions focused on the tools and techniques used for capturing Location Audio.  We learned of the different kinds of microphones, how to properly use a shotgun mic on a boom pole, and John told us many stories of his various work on big budget productions, from corporate videos to national-level commercials to feature films.  We got a hands-on time practicing with the boom mic, following a moving “talent” (played by yours truly) as he spoke to the camera, and also while having a conversation with a second talent.

There was so much covered today that it’s absolutely impossible to even briefly go over it all.  One highly useful piece of information that John gave was what he recommended for a basic field audio kit.

Tomorrow’s sessions will focus on Audio Editing and Recording during Post-Production.  If today is any sign of what’s to come, I’m sure that my expectations will be met above and beyond what I had anticipated (and that was quite a bit!)  I would highly encourage any aspiring filmmaker to seriously consider attending future Rocky Mountain Christian Filmmaker Camps.  You won’t regret it!

Tuesday's Report

Whew!  Yet another day of information overload!  Today’s sessions focused on recording voice-overs, ADR, and foley.  John gave us copies of Location Audio Logs and Audio Post Production Cue Sheets and told us how they were used.  He told us about the various forms of getting audio files from the video editor, and discussed the pros and cons of different models of microphones for studio recording.  We then covered recording techniques for ADR and voice-overs, and we got to record our own voices and foley onto a clip from a TV special that John did the sound design on.

Two days down, three to go!

Wednesday's Report

Today John gave us a lot of information to digest.  The lessons focused on sound design and music scoring.  He showed us portions of an Adventures in Odyssey episode that he worked on and told us about all the work that goes into putting an audio drama together, and we learned just how important it is to have sound effects and ambience sounds, both in an audio program and in video.  To illustrate the latter usage, he showed us some commercials done by Focus on the Family, as well as clips from a documentary that he had done the sound design on.

The second half of the day focused on music scoring.  Not that he taught us how to compose, but he discussed using stock music, loop-based music and licensed music, and the pros and cons of each.  We learned about how different emotions can be manipulated (for lack of a better word) by the musical score.  We had the great treat of seeing a short portion of the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum’s planetarium show that he composed the score for and he told us how he got the gig, and everything that went into composing/sound design experience.

And so Day 3 of the 2007 Rocky Mountain Christian Audio Camp came to a close.  It’s hard to believe that it’s almost over!  This has been an awesome learning experience, and I’ll be sad to see it end.

Zack
